Celebrating Great Heck Basin: 200 Years of Waterway History
The Great Heck Basin was first dug between 1826 and 1828, intended to link a new wagonway with the Knottingley & Goole Canal. Its purpose was bold: to move stone from the Wentbridge and Kirksmeaton quarries onto barges bound for London.
The railway behind the project collapsed financially in 1829, leaving the basin unfinished and never used as the busy stone port it was meant to be. Instead, it became part of the thriving Aire & Calder Navigation, serving local agriculture and industry for generations.
Swing bridges, canal workers’ homes, and steady goods traffic shaped the area through the 19th and 20th centuries. Gradually, farming, road building, and canal maintenance erased the original dock layout — but the basin’s footprint remained.
Today, two centuries later, the site has a new life as the home of South Yorkshire Boat Club. A place where community, heritage, and the waterways come together — continuing a story that began in 1826.

We only sell Red Diesel to our Members for use in their boats
